Freedom is a MINDSET
The Power of Prayer and Gratitude
Today, I want to share a personal story about the transformative power of prayer and gratitude. I’ve been wrongfully incarcerated for some time now, and last night, like every night, I prayed. I expressed my thankfulness for all the blessings God has given me. However, last night was different. Instead of just asking for forgiveness and praying for the protection and love of my children, I asked for something specific: bail. I asked to be released from jail.
Despite the concrete floors and the presence of another inmate in the bunk below, I knelt down to pray. It didn’t matter if it looked strange; I was determined to pray. My attorney had told me I had a 0% chance of getting bail. But, as we went to court this morning, something extraordinary happened. Arguments were made, and to everyone’s astonishment, the judge reduced my bail from $1.845 million to $1,000. My attorney was shocked, mouthing “wow” to me as the judge made the decision. I was overwhelmed with gratitude.
For the rest of the morning and during lunch, I felt a profound sense of euphoria. After being incarcerated for over three years with no clear end in sight, I finally saw a glimmer of hope. I was on the phone with my mom, and my sister was on her way to post my bail when I was unexpectedly called back to court. A sense of foreboding set in. The DA had called an emergency session and convinced the judge to rescind my bail.
Initially, I was shocked and felt it was unjust. My family and loved ones were devastated, having just celebrated the prospect of my release. But as I sat in the holding cell, I began to gather my thoughts and strength. I realized that they hadn’t taken away anything I didn’t already possess. My physical liberty was under their control, but my freedom of mind and spirit was mine alone.
This experience reaffirmed a powerful truth: freedom is not solely defined by physical circumstances. Even in confinement, I am free. My liberty may be constrained, but my spirit is unbound. The gratitude I feel for this realization is immense. I will continue to work on and develop my mind, body, and soul.
If you find yourself in a situation that is less than ideal, remember that you have the power to change your mindset and recognize the blessings you already have. This freedom of thought and perspective is invaluable, and no one can take it away from you.
