True Self
Today, I experienced another setback in my fight for freedom. Surprisingly, I find myself at peace. The realization that I might have to spend more time incarcerated is frustrating, but it’s essential to recognize that challenging situations test your true identity. In these moments, it’s crucial to remember who you are.
The world, and sometimes the entire universe, will try to label you, defining who and what you are. But you must resist accepting those labels, especially the negative ones. Likewise, you shouldn’t let praise inflate your ego. When someone tells you that you’re amazing or beautiful, it’s okay to acknowledge the compliment, but it’s essential not to internalize it. True self-worth comes from within, not from external validation.
Accepting compliments without letting them define you keeps you humble. Relying on others’ opinions to shape your self-image can be dangerous. People often have their own agendas; negative labels can be intended to hurt or persecute you, while positive ones can be used to manipulate you.
This dynamic is evident in many areas of life. For example, when someone is trying to win your favor, compliments are abundant. Conversely, in a courtroom, insults are commonplace to condemn someone. Positive and negative interactions occur every day, but it’s important not to let them affect your core.
Your true self is the essence of who you are, and it requires self-work and personal development to anchor and understand it. You can gauge your progress by observing your reactions to others. If negative comments affect you deeply, it can lead to dark paths like depression, substance abuse, or worse. On the other hand, if you depend on positive feedback for validation, you’ll constantly crave it, making you susceptible to manipulation and hindering your ability to carve your own path in life.
